It’s as if nothing else matters on this torn island except elections – this time it’s the EU elections. Consequently, all the political parties are at it again accusing each other for policy failures to gain votes yet; they refuse to admit they are part of that failure! In the absence of political transparency there is so much spinning of the truth peddled by politicians, it’s an insult to people’s intelligence.
Even President Anastasiades is campaigning in an undignified manner. He is actually using his status and official position to influence votes in support of his party for Sunday’s EU elections. DYSI’s Svengali party leader on the other hand, has proven to be the most zealous of them all. During campaign trails, he tears his throat apart and shrieks at the top of his voice – just like Hitler did once – to manipulate and persuade voters switch loyalty for his party! Such dictatorial-style outbursts have no place in a civilized society.
It’s gratifying to note however, that the electorate is no longer gullible to such rousing behavior by petty politicians and they can read through the cheap veneer of political pomposity. Actually, electing MEP’s makes no difference to peoples’ lives and most refuse to get on the electoral bandwagon steered by clever EU propaganda campaigns.
It is evident enough that citizens are rebelling and will use their ballots to punish politicians for one more time. Based on previous results 40-45% (if not more) of the people would choose to abstain from voting; cast a blank vote (NOTA) or simply vote for smaller independent or nationalist parties. This proves that politicians can no longer be trusted to represent the people.
Meanwhile, the likelihood of losing policy control and power petrifies larger parties and are trying to hogwash the opposition but especially the rising nationalist parties that have become the archenemy of the times.
For Cyprus, if the nationalist party ELAM wins seats without a doubt will join all other democratically elected nationalist parties to destabilize the cozy EU relationship of a blatant politicocracy (kommatokratia); a politicocracy that brought about inequality, triggered social disobedience the likes of Yellow Vests and has bitterly failed citizens to live in a fair society.
Sunday’s elections would certainly punish the status quo and send out a message to the political parties that they can no longer manipulate people’s votes for party political ambitions. A massive blow indeed and in the right direction!
